First Aid at Work: essential skills for workplace emergencies

In today's fast-paced work environments, accidents and medical emergencies can occur at any moment. Being prepared to handle such situations is essential — and that's where first aid at work courses come into play. These courses equip employees with the skills and knowledge to respond to and manage a variety of emergencies until professional medical help arrives.

Enrolling in a first aid at work course provides valuable training on how to effectively treat various injuries and medical conditions, such as bleeding, sprains, broken bones and shock. The courses also cover essential life-saving techniques, such as CPR and the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs), which can make a significant difference in the outcome of a sudden cardiac arrest. By investing in employees' first aid training, you contribute to the overall safety and wellbeing of your team and foster a culture of preparedness and responsibility in the workplace.

Course overview

Our First Aid at Work course is designed to provide the essential knowledge and skills needed to manage workplace first aid emergencies effectively. We've tailored it to ensure you gain a comprehensive understanding of the subject, enabling you to support your colleagues in times of need.

The course begins with the basics of first aid, including incident management and crucial techniques for administering first aid in difficult situations. We then move on to handling secondary illnesses and injuries, such as fractures and dislocations. Alongside the standard procedures, the curriculum also covers first aid for severe trauma (FAST) and automated external defibrillator (AED) usage for a holistic approach. To help you grasp the material thoroughly, the course uses diverse teaching methods:

Throughout, we emphasise not only the practical skills needed to administer first aid, but also the importance of effective communication and teamwork in emergency situations.

First Aid at Work certification

Delegates receive a training certificate at the end of each course, demonstrating their level of qualification and providing evidence of their training. This certificate is accepted by Ofqual and is required by many employers and organisations.

Learning objectives

Through our First Aid at Work course, we equip participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to respond effectively to a range of medical emergencies in the workplace. The course is designed with the following objectives in mind:

  • Preserve life — ensuring participants are well-prepared to provide immediate attention to injured or sick individuals, potentially saving lives.
  • Prevent escalation — providing initial care to prevent an existing condition worsening while awaiting further medical assistance.
  • Promote recovery — equipping participants with the tools and techniques to alleviate suffering and aid recovery.
  • Assess the situation — developing the ability to evaluate emergencies appropriately, then deliver first aid safely and effectively.
  • Prevent cross-infection — maintaining high standards of hygiene to avoid the spread of infection during first aid.

We address a wide range of emergencies relevant to different work environments, so you feel more confident in your ability to provide first aid when needed. These scenarios may include:

First aid at work basics

As an essential component of workplace safety, it's important to understand the fundamentals of first aid. When an accident occurs, you must assess the situation quickly and effectively: determine the severity of the injury and ensure the area is safe for both the casualty and the first aider. Always prioritise your own safety before attending to others.

The second crucial step is to call for help — whether informing a colleague, a manager or dialling the emergency services. Relay accurate information about the incident, the location and any potential hazards. While awaiting assistance, provide basic first aid to the best of your ability. Essential skills to consider include:

  • How to perform CPR
  • Understanding the recovery position
  • Managing bleeding and wounds
  • How to treat burns and scalds
  • Recognising the signs of shock

Finally, remember that first aid is designed to be an immediate response — it is not a substitute for professional medical care. Always encourage the injured person to seek further assessment and treatment as necessary.

Understanding CPR and AED

CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) helps maintain blood flow and oxygen supply to the brain and other vital organs during cardiac arrest, through a combination of chest compressions and rescue breaths. We teach the correct techniques, hand placement and compression depth for performing CPR on adults, children and infants. The key steps are:

  1. Check for responsiveness and call for emergency help if required.
  2. Begin chest compressions at a rate of 100–120 per minute.
  3. Give two rescue breaths after every 30 compressions.
  4. Continue until help arrives, an AED becomes available, or the person regains consciousness.
30:2 The standard ratio — 30 chest compressions to 2 rescue breaths — practised hands-on during every course.

An AED is a portable device that can automatically diagnose life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias and deliver electrical shocks to restore a normal heart rhythm. Used alongside CPR, an AED can significantly increase the chances of survival. We teach you how to operate one effectively:

  1. Turn the AED on and follow the audio/visual prompts.
  2. Attach the pads to the casualty's chest as shown in the diagrams.
  3. Ensure no one is touching the casualty before delivering a shock.
  4. Resume CPR immediately after the shock, whether or not one was advised.
  5. Continue following the prompts until professional help arrives or the person recovers.
